There are several things to do when trying to protect yourself and kids from those nasty bugs in the yard during the summer. One thing to do is plant marigolds around the yard, the flowers give off a smell that bugs do not like, so plant some in that garden also to help ward off bugs without using insecticides.
Not sure if it is true, But I heard that skeeters do not like marigolds either..

Ask your local greenhouse or nursery for the Mosquito plant. They are usually priced around 2 or 3 bucks but they do work.
You can sometimes find them in the garden section of Lowes or Walmart too.

citronella plants- if you shake the leaves around once in awhile they are even more effective. The biggest thing is to not have any standing water anywhere.

Try small flowers or a cactus. Anything without a degree of water around it. something that requires very little rain water, such as cacti.
