I was just looking up an answer and came across this quote, "Remember the early 70's ? Complete and utter bilge. All glamrock, teenybop, and homogenized Uptown Soul. And worse, mainstream Rock had somehow contrived to degenerate into an abyss of inconceivable tedium, pretentiousness, and self-indulgence. " That rings true to me. How about you? If it wasn't the 70s, which decade was worse?

Very interesting opinions. The consensus seems to be either the 80s or now.
I think I should have asked everyone to give their age too, for reference at least. Funny, whoever it was that said I was too young to remember the 70s...I'm 50! I do remember the 70s, and that's why I asked the question. Perhaps you weren't in college agonizing as the Bee Gees slowly eroded the foundation of great music that had come before.
I found myself wanting something harder and edgier, but still saying something worthwhile. Even as disco died out, mainstream radio was overrun with uninspired, limp songs that make up the bulk of today's "Lite Rock". It was the most apathetic of times. Maybe we're in another era of that sort now.
I do agree however, that there were good and bad eras within each decade. To each his own I guess.

the '70's, were good and, bad for rock. in the early seventies, there was a period of excess boredom the likes of which, I hope never to see again. it seemed like every time You turned on the radio, some D.J., was trying to shove seasons in the sun, American pie or, Barry Manilow, down Your throat. however, there were some bright spots. bands just releasing their first records were, LED ZEPPELIN, BAD COMPANY, FOREIGNER, FOGHAT, PINK FLOYD, KISS and, AEROSMITH. for Me, I think the late seventies, were the worst while the eighties, were the best. so many different kinds of music. the worst is, now.

The 70's can't have been as bad as our decade now. Pink Floyd, Boston, and Kansas were around then, so it didn't suck. Punk was big in the 70's too. This stupid decade that we're living in now does. Pop-rock/emo music and rap dominates our world, and most new bands are sellouts. Teens are too worried about being popular that they'll lie about everything, including their music taste. That's probably why no good rock band can get big, because the music industry doesn't care about quality anymore. People have obviously forgotton what real music is like, and I hope that real rock music will finally be on top, where it's supposed to be.

oh, I think this decade is the worst. All of these stupid little five minute rock bands that are out now are all the same.
The 70s started out not too good. I mean they were coming off the steam of the 60s which was the greatest decade. But the 70s ended with a bang. It was the birth of many great bands.
Black Sabbath was born then. U2 was born in the 70s. Aerosmith, AC/DC/, The Eagles, Dire Straits, The Grateful Dead, Kiss, Led Zeppelin, Neal Young, Lynard Skynard, Van Halen and ZZ Top.
There were some really good bands.

I vote 80's. There were a few good bands in the beginning & end of the 80's (Blondie, Gary Numan, Talking Heads, The Vapors & the old school gangsta rap like Public Enemy & NWA) but the mid 80's were pretty lame. I can't say 50's, 60's or 70's cuz I love the old stuff, & Nirvana & the new Britpop Invasion (Oasis, Blur, Suede, Placebo, Pulp...) saved the 90's for me! I still hear new bands I like (Secret Machines, Interpol, The Faint) & I'm no "spring chicken"!

oh come 0on the 70's???? the 70's were great. sure there was the whole disco bullsh*t, but your forgetting some of the great groups taht came out of the 70's.groups like KISS, AC/DC, Lynrd Skynrd, Black Sabbath, Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, Bob Segar, The Eagles, David Bowie, Eric Clapton, Fleetwood Mac, Queen, Ted Nuggent, ZZ Top,etc.
some of the most influential bands who still hold up well today came from the 70's.
if you ask me the worst decade for music was the 90's. not alot of memorable music or bands from the decade. the most memorable for me are nirvana & soundgarden. unless of course you want to count a bunch of one hit wonders and boy bands such as ricky martin, nysync, and the backstreet boys. yuck!!

Omg, who ever wrote that is so wrong, it's not even funny.
Worst decade for rock? Well, that's a tricky question. Every decade from the 50s to now had great rock. Just that certain *periods* were lame.
Like:
The late 50s/early 60s- pre-Beatles & vapid teen idols
the mid/late 80s- mostly forgettable pop like Milli Vanilli & Tiffany.
mid 90s - early 2000s: pop divas & freakin boy bands galore

I would say the 21st century is the worst thus far.
The 60's had the stones, jimi hendrix and led zeppelin, the doors, the who
The 70's had black sabbath, aerosmith, pink floyd, the stones, led zeppelin, ACDC, Queen and KISS
The 80's had the stones, black sabbath, aerosmith, ACDC,Queen, Guns n Roses and KISS
The 90's had the stones, Guns n Roses(first half), KISS(first half), Queen, AC/DC (first half) and Queen(first half),
the 21st century hasn't had much of anything good

I think that it was the 80's but some people say it was the 90's. But I believe it was more of the 80's.

The 70s seemed like a good year. It was definatly the 80s with all those hair bands and that annoying techno music.

I guess I'd say the "rock" music of now. All those constipated-sounding lead singers like the dude from Hinder. I can't stomach it, which is why I listen to Indie!
