To be legal, the helmet has to be DOT approved (Department of Motor Vehicles).
A football helmet is not DOT approved, therefore not legal. I don't think a police officer will give you a hard time about wearing your military helmet (unless he/she's a hard a**). They won't pull you over because of your helmet. But if you get pulled over for another traffic infraction, well...I don't think they'll know the difference. LOL
There are a lot of novelty "half" helmets that are DOT approved.
But as others have said, it's not very safe and won't protect your scull in an accident. The interior of motorcycle helmet acts as a shock absorber.

Probably not. Check the regulation on your base as to the specifications for motorcycle helmets and you'll find that not only do ALL military bases require the wearing of helmets, the regulations also require that the helmets be DOT approved. Army kevlar helmets are NOT DOT approved.

No it isn't legal. They are not DOT approved. The way a helmet protects you is by having a liner that crushes to absorb the impact. A metal (or kevlar) helmet without a crush liner wouldn't do much good in an impact. It would help in a slide.

A helmet has to be D.O.T. approved to be street legal. And should have the sticker displayed on the exterior. You may stopped and be ticketed without. A SNELL Foundation approved helmet(required by most race sancioning bodies but not for street) is even better.

There's more to a helmet than its outer strength. It must fit properly and absorb energy. A military helmet is designed to perform under different conditions than a motorcycle helmet and may cause more injury than it prevents.
Wear a properly fitted DOT approved helmet.

All helmet laws are by state. If they say military helmets are ok then they're ok. Nuff said!
