We are human beings and we have something like a need to know where we come from and what was before us, and we have something like a culture and generally remember events that somehow had a big impact on our society, culture and identity, and we remember the dead. I feel we would be like animals if we wouldn't. The Holocaust happened very recently so that even people who were personally affected are still alive and others are only one or two generations away from it. It happened in Europe, in the middle of what we call "Western civilization" and was more horrible than anything before. At the same time we also have to know about the whole World War II that along with the Holocaust massively changed especially Europe, but also had effects on other parts of the world.
And as others said before me, we have to learn from it and I believe we have to quite an extend, although not enough.
I'm German, so I'll write about the situation here in Germany. Before the Holocaust and World War II, antisemitism, other racism, extreme nationalism etc. were common and totally presentable in society here. I don't say these things don't exist anymore, but they are no more accepted by many people, there are laws to suppress such agitation, and this is in part because most people have understood now that such thoughts could have devastating consequences. It's not so that all the people would turn into Nazis if they didn't know about the Holocaust, but the neo-Nazis would certainly have better chances then to spread their sick ideas than they have them now.
However I think even without knowledge of the worst crime in history people should be able to understand that racism, hatred and killing are wrong. I also think there is something very wrong if people think they should not be antisemites or otherwise racist mainly for the reason that there was the Holocaust. I mean they shouldn't hate and stereotype others simply because it is wrong in itself. I think understanding this is more important than knowing very much about the Holocaust.
But however, I think we would be like animals if we forgot the Holocaust.

No one is forcing anyone to learn anything, but most people like to learn all they can about history to try and understand why things happen the way they do and to broaden their mind..

We teach it so it doesn't happen again. Then we look at Rwanda, Darfur, Bosnia, and Kosovo, and we just watch it happen again and again.
bajricf: I didn't know that. Very cool link.
