if the rules are that you cant use cell phones at work then you cant use them no in the employee hand book does it say no cell phones? at my old job we were not alloud to use cell phones and if we did we would either get writen up or sent home because rules are rules.... at least they only took it away, now did they give you a worning? or did they out of the blue walk over and take it from you? i know at my old job they said we dont pay you to talk on the phone to your friends.......they should have told you to put it away....like and adult would,....for children you would have to take things away......

Yes....they are allowed. If there is a memo stating that cell phones will be taken, then you are to comply with their demands, you are in the workplace and they have set their rules.

They have every right to limit your cell phone usage while at work.

The only way that they could tell that you had one, is if you were talking on it during company time. This in turn would mean that you had willfully violated company policy.

I'll be honest, I don't know the legality of it, (I'm not a lawyer), but I completely support the idea!!!

Good Luck!!

Cell phones are personal property and therefore covered by theft laws.

They can certainly ask you to turn them off while in the office. But taking them away seems a little extreme unless it has something to do with electronics. You should just leave it in your car.
