I believe the United States has already favored the Shiites leading to Sunni resentment which is part of the reason the two groups are fighting. The Sunni feel under represented in the Iraqi national government which they feel isn't treating them fairly. The United States must fairly negotiate a ceasefire between all the Sunni and Shi'ite groups it can, work towards a form of democratic government that the Sunnis feel gives them fair enough representation to sign onto more fully and work towards uniting Shiites AND Sunnis in batting those hardliners and terrorists who still commit violence once the United States has left the country. And if you recall they weren't really fighting a civil war until Al' Aida blow up the Sunni's most holy mosque in Sumara which I don't believe has been rebuilt yet which once done will help ease some bad blood at least to some degree. Actually the practice of slavery was completely wrong making the north right at least in that respect. The right of state's to leave the union is another matter which is much cloudier and I can't say for certain.

The Sunnis were the minority and were in power under Saddam. Once out of power, the Shiites are now taking their revenge. Thus the civil war. The Sunnis are supported by Saudi Arabia, and the Shiites are supported by Iraq.
To ask who is more ethical and just, would be like asking the same question during the civil war in the US. Who was more ethical, the North or the South? War is War!

Neither. That is the problem with the war in Iraq. It is a fight between the bad guys and the other bad guys. The Sunnis include Al Quida hardly our friends. But the Shiites include the Iranians who are threatening to become a hostile nuclear power. No allies here

The Shiites are at war with Al Quieda.
Given that we are at war with Al Quieda it would seem self evident
