The witches in Macbeth are evil. I get that much. Man, by nature, is evil. Do the witches suggest evil to man, or do they simply suggest an object which may entice the inclination to evil which is always within man because of original sin?

Thanks in advance!

The witches can cause evil themselves, or they can bring out the evil within man. All together I believe that they suggest evil in the world; to man, by man, because of man. They tell half truths to presuade Macbeth (and most likely countless others) to commit horrible crimes, which can lead to their death. The witches are evil in all forms.

I have always given a different take to the witches. I view them as something forbidden - he is seeking forbidden knowledge - a glimpse into the future. And I have always believed he paid a price for being given that knowledge. I have read many interpretations for what the witches represent. Your idea of them being an object which entices the inclination to evil fits in whith my theory. Who wouldnt want to know the future if they could? But at what price? Pax - C.

The witches are not evil. They are prophets. They know what's going to happen, and in cryptic language, they try to let others know. It doesn't help, because the characters are so wrapped up in their own emotions that they don't take time to look at the big picture. The witches provide the big picture.

Shakespeare is far more subtle and nuanced than just the battle of good and evil. Read it again.

the witches which suggest evil are nt an outside element . they r just a representation of the evil within man...it may nt b because of original sin cuz saying this will narrow down the canvas... if u have read dr faustus there also is a bad angel n a gud angel ...no outside elements buddy they r the voices within. sometimes i wonder if macbeth really ''SAW'' those witches infront of him ..they r the representations of what man feels from within.

The audience is left to ask whether the witches are independent agents toying with human lives, or agents of fate, whose prophecies are only reports of the inevitable. they are puppeteers. they suggest an object which may entice the inclination to evil which is always within man because of weakness and ignorancy.

the witches in Macbeth tells him what is going to happen to him but they don't actually effect the outcome of events. maybe they are ambiguous but they didn't lie....

Shakespeare doesn't say - they could be both or neither. He is far too subtle a writer to tell you what to think - they are malign, and can tell the future, that's all we know.
