Stability
A feeling of family
Limits
Power
Attention.
Kids who lack parental supervision and involvement end up in gangs because they need to feel they belong somewhere and since they are at a very vulnerable age and subject to peer pressure, most of them end up in gangs or crews.

Most teens and kids join gangs or crews to feel like a part of the incrowwd, but in a nutshell, most of them have low self-esteem and just want to be accepted by a group that they likely have something in common with the other people

Never been in or even came close to joining a gang myself but I would image kids join because they see gang members treated with a fear/respect that maybe they usually don't get.
Maybe it's the sense of belonging to something. Not endorsing the behavior but just throwing out possible reasons why people might join.

they are trying to fit in. it's either being a loner or that. im a loner, trust me but im staying a loner until i can find the right kind of people to hang with.

They think their cool and all when their just being retards...there's kids in my school that try to act all "gangster" adn what not and i was like WTF!! YOur in school to STUDy not fuking fool around and be all "fly" ...their all gonna end up in mcdonalds ...im actually thankful for these low lives because without them we wouldn't have the plumbers, the construction workers, the cablevision box installers, and other mediocre jobs.

because they think that its cool. they want respect and they believe that thats the only way to get it. right or wrong they THINK that its cool and you are soooooo right, its not.
