Unless it's some sort of usable denomination I would think no. If your bill is $10, 35 percent would be $3.50...then that person has to drive all the way to the nearest Target, which very well may cost that much or more in gas...waitstaff makes LESS than minimum wage because potential tips are included to make at least minimum, though in a given hour they may not make it up to that level. If you want to be generous and leave 35% then go for it, but skip the gift card unless you want to be extravagantly generous :)

No. While it's OK to give a giftcard as a holiday present to people, the waitstaff depend on tips as part of their income. Maybe they have to pay their rent that week, and a Target giftcard isn't going to do much to help that.

35 percent is alot. my sister is a waitress, and she on average gets around 13.5 percent out of the whole cost of the meal. however, it depends on the restaurant. if the tips are divided then no. but where my sister works if you work the table, you get the tip. however, i would still not leave a gift card.

i would tend to be a bit more lenient since a gratuity is awarded, not contracted as the bill is. i have never worked in a restaurant but i'm sure there are people who come and go without tipping, although they are probably the minority. i'm guessing you raised this question for a specific occasion because you probably don't just carry gift cards around with you. i'm guessing you are having a debate with someone over what has already occurred. i think the "tipping" police in this case should be happy with the 35% as opposed to the potential 0 and put it to bed . i'm guessing that's the end of it. thanks for asking!

I would think no, since tips are usually shared with all the staff. Kind of hard to split a giftcard.

I don't think there is a precedent for this..you may want to ask one of those newspaper ladies...While I don't think they want every tip to be a gift card, I am sure that most of them would not mind...
