If you like Sci-Fi and Fantasy you will absolutely love Piers Anthony's books. I started out with a book I found of his when I was 16. The book was titled Castle Roogna. I have been hooked on his books ever since. I am now 27. There is a lot of irony and sarcasm in his books but not all of it is readily apparent. Some is though like in the books Heaven Cent and Crewel Lye. Those are in the Xanth Series. Those are more fantasy than Sci-Fi. However, more on the Sci-Fi side is the Robot Adept Series. Enjoy and good luck in your search. Everyone's tastes are different and what interests me may be different from what interests you. Another good place to check is Amazon. That is where I find a lot of my books. Best of luck.

Author: Douglas Adams (Hitchhiker's Series [first book=The HItchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy], Dirk Gently's Hollistic Detective Agency [i think there's a sequel to this one])
Book: Celestial Matters (by Richard Garfinkle) (this is a sci-fi/hi-fi novel so you may like it [beginning is a little hard to get through and the assassination attempts may appear repetitive] [won some award for best first novel])
Author: Piers Anthony (Xanth Series [first book i believe is: A Spell for Chameleon], Incarnations of Immortality [first book is: On a Pale Horse. most of these have adult content but the first one does not and if you dont read any of the others this one is very interesting on the perspective of death])
Author: Terry Pratchett (spelling may be off, i still need to read these books but i've heard from very reliable friends who are into fantasy novels that they're amazing [first book in one of them is: Wee Free Men])
Book: The Cave (by Jose Saramago) (realistic fiction sort of reminiscent of 1984 in the antiutopian sense, might want to learn about the analogy of the cave by plato before reading, interesting writing style but you either love it or hate it)

A drop dead amazing book is Eragon by Christopher Paolini. It won the Rhode Island Teen book award among about 20 others. That is in the Fantasy genre. For science fiction, I would recommend Remnants by K.A. Applegate, or The Supernaturalist by Eoin Colfer.

You might like Dune by Frank Herbert. Even better is the books by Frank's son Brian Herbert. I recommend the trilogy that begins with The Butlerian Jihad by Brian Herbert. It's the best war between man & machine story I know of. It's very well written, great science fiction fantasy.

Have your tried J.R.R. Tolkien or CS Lewis books? Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit are excellent books, fantasy is the key feature. A lot of C.S. Lewis books are also that way. I would look into those two authors.
