They are both correct. If you are in the United States you should use the er ending, everywhere else the re ending. If it were not for Teddy Roosevelt getting offended by a British gentleman and changing the British spelling of words to 'Americanized' variants we would all be spelling favour, colour, theater etc. We would still refer to the boot and the bonnet and put tyres on our auto. So it really does not matter. Except depending on where you live and how people feel about using the British/European spelling of words. Some Americans may think you are snobbish or as the British would say snooty. Think of Astaire and Rogers debating it in their roller skating/tap number. That gets the mood across perfectly. The reality is you are just correct.

Either spelling is acceptable. 'Theatre' is the more formal spelling of the word, used for Broadway and other live productions, whereas 'theater' is the common usage used for motion pictures
One would plan an evening with dear friends to see 'Cats' at the theatre. You would see a new release movie at the theater.
What is more important than spelling the word is experiencing the real thing

Both ways are acceptable. Usually spelling it "theatre" is more formal, and could possibly be considered slang if spelled "theater" but either way is correct.
Some people spell it different for different places. If your going to a play, musical, or whatever, people usually spell it "theatre." If your going to the movies, others spell it "theater."
It could also depend what country you're from. Here in America, we spell it "theater." Over in Europe, people spell it "theatre," just like they spell "favourite" or "harbour" or "colour."

Theater, in my experience is the building, house and stage where performances are held. Theatre is 'the art' itself.
