If you are talking about the American colonies or the British North American colonies, the main problem was that the colonists feared another situation like they had with King George III. When reading the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution, one can see how the fear of tyranny is the background of a great many issues and rules governing our country. The colonists, more than anything else, wanted to be rid of everything that even remotely smelled of monarchy, nobility, and the system the Great Britain had. It is therefore sort of ironic that they seriously considered making George Washington a king, replace one King George with another King George. They were sensible enough not to let it happen and Washington also knew better. We really had a number of great leaders in the early nation stage of the USA.
