In another 5 billion years or so, the sun will go through a red giant phase where it will swell up to close to the earth's orbit or maybe slightly beyond. So at that time the earth will be destroyed by the sun's expansion before it goes into a white dwarf phase. It will never have a nova phase.

The Sun is very hot, but anyone can see how small it is. Even the Moon looks much bigger than that.
If the Sun hit the Earth in 2013 it probably would fall into one of the oceans or into the Bermuda Triangle and go out. Then it would be night all the time and after a million years bats would rule the world..
If it hit real hard it would go right through and keep on going because the flat Earth is really pretty thin. The Coriolis Force would keep all the water from running out of the hole in the clockwise direction.

The Sun does not have enough mass to explode as a supernova. Instead, in 4-5 billion years, it will enter a red giant phase, its outer layers expanding as the hydrogen fuel in the core is consumed and the core contracts and heats up. Helium fusion will begin when the core temperature reaches around 100 MK, and will produce carbon and oxygen. While it is likely that the expansion of the outer layers of the Sun will reach the current position of Earth's orbit, recent research suggests that mass lost from the Sun earlier in its red giant phase will cause the Earth's orbit to move further out, preventing it from being engulfed. However, Earth's water will be boiled away and most of its atmosphere will escape into space.

Possibly. The Sun WILL NOT Supernova. It doesn't have the mass. It will instead swell into a Red Giant and "puff" off most of it's mass.
When the Sun expands into the Red Giant stage of it's life all of the inner planets may be swallowed up. The controversy is whether the Earth will be destroyed outright or if it will orbit within the Suns atmosphere.

some time in the future, the sun will swell. it will eat up the inner planets (including earth).
by that time, pluto will be warm enough to support a small human outpost, so mankind isn't done for. now all we gotta do is dodge war, global warming, AIDS, tsunamis, pollution, etc. oh, and make a rocket ship to pluto =] we have plenty of time right? a few billion years..

Yeah, eventually. To those who say this won't happen for milllions or even billions of years, ask yourself this: how do they know that? Don't you think it's possible they have no earthly idea and are just telling you this to make you feel better? If they can predict when stars will change phase the same way they can predict eclipses, why can't I go to a Web site that tells me where and when to see one?

I believe that when the sun expands into a giant star near the end of its life, its expanded size will not extend to Earth's orbit. However, the increased output of radiation will blow off the Earth's atmosphere, ending any life that would exist on it at that time. When it fully ends its life, its predicted that the Sun will simply blow away its remaining gasses and produce a planetary nebula. That will not destroy the earth, but will pretty much leave it as a dead planet.

Yes. The earth will be destroyed by the sun once it reaches red giant stage. This won't happen for a long, long, long time. (i.e. there are other things to worry about)

That is a rumor, that the Earth will be destroyed by the sun.Nobody can be sure until it really happens, which wouldn't occur now that global warming is in effect.

I've heard this from some people at work. The extremely obese people's weight could make earth hit the sun.
I doubt this is true but it's something to think about.
