My girlfriend just had the audacity of proclaiming Faith No More's rendition of "War Pigs" better than the Black Sabbath version. Now I'd be the first to admit some remakes are better than the original and here are a few I'd stick my neck out on. Feel free to weigh in on any of my choices and add a few from your collection:

Peal Jam's version of "Masters of War" better than Bob Dillon

Concrete Blonde's, "Everybody Knows" better than Leonard Coen (sp?)

Bo Bice's accapella version of "In a dream" slightly better than Badlands

Paige and Plants '94 version of "Hangman" better than Zeppelin's original

Nirvana's "Lake of Fire" better than the Meat Puppets

David Lee Roth's "Tobacco Road" better than Rare Earth

Motley Crue's "Smokin' in the Boy's Room" better than Brownville Station

Disturbs "Land of Confusion" So much better than Genesis....and I dug the original & "Shout" by Tears for Fears.

Red Hot Chili Peppers "Higher Ground" better than Stevie

As your girlfriend... let me start this answer by saying that you are clearly wrong in thinking that the original War Pigs is better than the energetic version from Faith No More. The lyrics and music are identical.. they did nothing to disrespect the original by adding cow sounds into it, or anything! They did the song a great justice by letting the younger population of rock fans listen to the music of greatness. Because of FNM, there are WAY more Ozzy fans in the world!

That being said.... you can't help but love the original songs by most bands. These songs have formed memories good and bad in your head. When someone remakes a song that brings back good memories for you- maybe a past love, or the such,-you almost feel violated and threatened.. cheated out of your memories. A small timing change, or key change in the middle of a song you knew and loved?!?! How DARE them!?!?! What gives them the right to disembowell your flippin song!?!?
BUT....... think about the songs you didn't really care about... lets concentrate on them. You mentioned RHCPs re-doing that Stevie Wonder hit. You like that song... but only from the RHCPs. You really don't like Stevie all that much. You liked the way they shook it up. It brought life into that old, haggard sway your head to the left and right song for you.

So the answer to your non-sensical question is that it is all a matter of taste. :P

Jimi Hendrix's "All Along the Watchtower" way better than Bob Dylan's original version
Janis Joplin's "Me and Bobby McGee" way better than Chris Christoferson's orignal.
Ray Charles' "Georgia on my Mind" better than Willie Nelson's original
Sometimes people are better songwriters than performers.
Could list some more but I don't think a comparison of Dolly to Whitney is a good idea LOL
