how did the green house effect start

Carbon dioxide is the main cause. We make so much of it burning fossil fuels that the CO2 has increased to the point it is reflecting the IR radiation back to the ground, and causing excess heating. The heavy increase in fossil fuel use which started with cars is the main cause.

Green house effect has always been here. At least, ever since there was an atmosphere. It's caused by our atmosphere stopping the heat from escaping back into space. Without green house effect we would be as cold as Mars.

Global warming as a result of green house effect, is a more recent development caused by burning fossil fuels and overloading the atmosphere with carbon dioxide. The more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, the more heat is trapped.

This probably got it's start during the industrial age (18th - 19th century) and has increased as the population increased.

The greenhouse effect is a normal, necessary feature for life on Earth. The greenhouse effect holds heat next to the Earth so we aren't frozen to death during the night when the sun's light is not warming us.

The problem now is that the greenhouse effect has been increased by having more greenhouse gases in the atmosphere than we used to have. It's like putting on another blanket when we already had the perfect amount of blankets on to keep us just at the right temperature. That extra blanket is going to keep in a little too much heat and make us too warm. The extra greenhouse gases (especially carbon dioxide, water vapor, and methane) keep in a little too much heat and make the Earth warm up a bit.

The greenhouse effect is caused by radiation absorption and retransmission of heat.

Like a dark car in the summer sun...the solar radiation can penetrate the window, but the heat emerging from the seats cannot as easily escape.

The Earth as a whole acts like this. Light can get through the atmosphere, but the reflected heat gets absorbed.
Water and CO2 in the air are the main culprits.

Water is the greenhouse gas that has by far the biggest influence. CO2 is rising and that is partially human caused though it also rises with just a rise in temperature. Visible light penetrates greenhouse gases and is absorbed as heat on the ground. Heat or infrared light is trapped by the greenhouse gases and prevented from escaping to space. That cause the temperature to rise. That is also why it is usually much warmer on a cloudy night then a very clear night, all other things being equal.
