Compromise to what? Liberals are socialists, who want the government to control the people, and Conservatives want to elect people to represent them in government. They are complete opposites. There is no compromising. It is one or the other, and no flip-flopping. America is a Republic, as it always was, but if a Liberal gets into office as a president, we start heading towards socialism. Remember Lyndon B. Johnson, a liberal democrat, started the food stamp program, and since then America has gone down hill. Republicans always seem to think it is the right thing for Americans to work. I agree with them.

America has gotten plenty far with our two party system so far, and there's no reason to assume compromise is possible when one side wants to impeach our President, while our nation is at war, for no good reason.

On the other hand, if we could unite against a common enemy, say terrorism, for example, rather than spending all of our time fighting over an administration we are stuck with, maybe we could kick *** and bring home our troops.

I would like it, too, if liberals and conservatives could find greater room for compromise. But, ....

"Many liberals had been brought up to believe that whatever happened to the other branches of government, the Supreme Court belonged to 'us.' It was 'ours.' Nobody could take that away. We could count on the justices, perhaps not in every case, but certainly over the long run. They would set matters straight when it came down to it.
"It was for this reason so many liberals of my generation became lawyers and so much faith was placed in litigation. The corollary is that even fewer became politicians, political organizers, and political fund-raisers. We eschewed the rough-and-tumble of dirty politics in favor of the neat and elite high road of the judiciary." (Supreme Injustice: How the High Court Hijacked Election 2000, by Alan Dershowitz, 2001.)

Too many liberals believe that they don't have to compromise with conservatives because they think that they've already got the ever-so-flexible Constitution solving our mutual problems in whatever way the liberals want.

I don't think mutual compromise is right - on some points one or the other is absolutely right and should NOT compromise. Trick is to genuinely hear the others' concerns, respond to them and then have THEM hear your responses. Most people who identify themselves as one or the other enjoy the team membership more than any honest quest for the truth or what's best for the country.

My section compromised witht eh Republicans for the ideal 8 long years, giving them their tax cuts for the wealthy--now, even because of the fact the country needs it only as badly as placed up 9/eleven--this is the GOP's turn to grant this section some thing as nicely their drained, wiped out sound bites.

I think so. I think when both sides cut the partisan crap they can actually pass sound policy that's good for this country. It's what was forced to happen in 94 with Clinton and the republican congress. Neitehr side could pass radical legislation so they went for the moderate stuff that actually does something good for this country.

Americans are prepared to sacrifice what freedoms they still have for the "security" afforded them by increased federal and military authority. Obviously they have not read Orwell, or if they have, apparently did not take his ideas seriously. The Patriot Act and the Department of Homeland Security have broadened federal powers and seriously infringed upon fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution. One of the most dangerous aspects of the Patriot Act is that it empowers law enforcement to act outside of the system of checks and balances so crucial to our Constitutional republic. Consolidation of FEMA into Homeland Security was one of the causes of the feeble federal response to the disaster in New Orleans . To those so eager to rush to the "secure embrace" of Big Brother, I would remind you that the fates of Jose Padilla, the prisoners at Guantanamo Bay , the residents of New Orleans , or even those of the Japanese citizens interned during World War II could befall you.

As Benjamin Franklin once said:

"They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security."
