I dont believe you can get it without a perscription. Your doctor will write you one if he/she feels it is appropriate for you. Metformin is more to help women who have PCOS and can sometimes help you ovulate, if you do not have PCOS but do not ovulate you may want to try clomid, which is also perscription.

You have to have a prescription for Metformin and any pharmacy will carry it. It is very inexpensive and it is one of the top 20 drugs prescribed at the pharmacy I work at. In case your Dr didn't describe it to you, it is actually a medication used in the treatment of diabetes. The hormonal imbalance of PCOS is believed to be caused by insulin resistance, which is why they prescribe it. The normal dose after initial titration in treatment of PCOS is metformin XR (extended release) up to 2000mg every day. The pills come in 500mg and you would probably take 1 daily for a week then 2 daily for a week then 3 daily for a week then 4 daily for a week and adjust until your levels are where they need to be. 1000 alternating with 1500 every other day was what worked for me, but no baby yet!

I got this through a script from my doctor.
I don't know if you can buy it without one... otherwise any pharmacy will have it.
Hope this helps...
