Try getting her things she will need later. Most of the stuff people get at showers is for the immediate future, i.e., crib, bouncer, car seat, clothes, etc. Some things that I look at now and wish I had put on my registry are safety items (gates, outlet plugs, etc.), toys that are for an older baby, sippy cups (and more sippy cups :), baby/toddler spoons, wipes are always needed, books for the baby etc.
One of the best gifts I've ever received is the baby bjorn plastic bib (kiddopotomus makes one too). I swear, I use this thing at every meal, it's fabulous.

The two things I use the most that I wish I had gotten as shower gifts? Batteries(mostly c and d, but some AA's too) and the bottle drainage rack. I think that's from munchkin. It also comes w/ a bottle brush. Even if she breastfeeds, eventually she will need a rack so she can give the baby bottles of water and juice. And angled bottles don't like to stand on end, lol. If you go with batteries, get a small toy that will use them too. Also, get some of the bigger size diapers, if she's buying them now, I guarentee she will have too many ones and twos, they grow out of em quick. My daughter went from 1 to two about 3 weeks ago, I have half a pack of size twos left out of two packs and will need to buy size 3 next time we get them. Have fun!

I would recommend buying her a Smile Saver gift certificate from Sears. I believe the package starts at $30.00, but in the Sunday paper, you can get that for 1/2 off. Basically, it allows her to take her baby in every few months for pictures, and we all know that baby's first-year pictures as they grow are important. There's no sitting fee and they are allotted a certain amount of pictures in various sizes. I bet she'll appreciate not having to worry about this since it's all pre-paid. As a new mother myself, this is something I would have loved to receive at my shower. Hope this helps!

What about buying HER something, like some stretchy comfy pants for when she gets home from the hospital? My mom gave me that at the baby shower and I loved it. :-).
Does she have baby monitors? Or I agree, C & D batteries would be a good gift. Maybe something cute for the nursery, if you know her color/theme, like a rug or a photo frame, or little shelves or something like that. They also have great little basket sets that you can use for organization. My aunt gave me this 'stroller bar' thing that straps to the front bar on a stroller and has toys and things for the baby to play with.

How about a custom diaper cake that has all those LITTLE things new parents don't think about. Items such as gas drops, Infant Tylenol, Teething gel, personalized embroidered onesie, personalized embroidered blankets and hooded towels, an infant massage kit, a lullabye CD....all those great little items that (when put together in a Custom Diaper Cake) will equal one terrific gift!!
I create custom diaper cakes....designed to match the shower theme or baby's nursery decor. Would love to create one for you....for your friend. I put the link to my site below....

You could always get something for the mum to be. At my baby shower a friend brought me a gift voucher to have a massage and facial for after the baby was born. It is valid for 12 months.

I say give both the mother and baby a gift, try something different for the baby like a diaper cake and for the mother do like bath and body works or something special for her.

It sounds funny but she will sincerely appreciate if you go out and buy her a ton of C and D batteries. Since she probably bought a swing, bouncer seat, etc., she will go through batteries like crazy.
Also I enjoyed receiving a set of nursing PJs, robe and slippers for my hospital stay. That was a thoughtful shower gift.

I would buy her a gift card to Wal-Mart or Babies R Us. Or if she already has everything she's going to need for the baby buy something for her like a robe or slippers for the hospital. I really appreciated gifts like that because it was a few less things I had to worry about getting for myself and was able to concentrate on the baby's arrival.
