I'm a karaoke host in training. My question is how important is it for you to have a good karaoke host running the show? If it is, what makes a host a good one? Having a good selection of music is a must, obviously. But what about the way he or she runs the show could make or break your karaoke experience as a customer?

i have to admit i love karaoke, and i've been to several different bars, experiencing many different KJs. I have two favorites who stick out in my mind, but they are both very different.

Stan the Man: he had a decent selection (not enough 80's) but he was so cool. if it was a slow night he would sing a few songs (and he was awesome) and everytime he introduced one of us he made us feel super special and announced us with a great booming voice, not you're typical "and for her first song tonight" blah. And every night he closed with our favorite song that he did so well.

That 70's guy: HUGE selection of music. and if you were singing a favorite of his he'd bust out his electric guitar and play along. he has costumes which add to the whole singing experience (i have yet to sing and wear one of his costumes, but it looks like fun for everyone else). he would walk over to you and personally tell you that you're next (very personable trait).

basically, you need to build a small relationship with you're guests, make them feel special and make sure they have fun so that they'll be sure to come back.

hope that helps!

It is rather important. If a host is a joke, then who would want to go and be bored to death. If you want to bring in the cash, get hoppin, make some noise, show the nervous, timid little karaoke-goers that it is that easy to get up in front of people and sing your heart out.
