It is not a case of busting out the atmosphere, as you call it. It is escaping Earth's gravity
The escape velocity of earth is about 7 miles/sec. But you only need 5 miles/sec to achieve orbit.

How so? To escape earth's atmosphere enough to orbit the earth at an altitude of 350 miles or so? Approx 17,500 mph (space shuttle/space station orbit velocity). To completely escape earths atmosphere and go onto other planets? Probably in excess of 20,000 mph

Escape velocity is the speed a craft must reach to escape an object's gravity field. To escape Earth's you must be going at 11.2 km/s or about 7 miles per second. (times 60 for mph) In reality, to escape Earth's gravity field, we first put the object in low orbit, where the escape velocity is lowered to 10.9km/s or even lower, then we accelerate it out.
