Wow! Someone who cares about spelling!! Kudos my friend!
I'm finding it quite interesting to see that many people using Yahoo Answers don't spell very well. I wonder if it has a lot to do with all the short forms used in Text Messaging and Instant Messaging.
I have also seen it first hand in public schools when I used to volunteer in the classroom. Few teachers were correcting spelling mistakes (apparently so that the child's self-esteem wasn't hurt)
There is nothing worse than seeing formal cover letters accompanying a resume, filled with errors. It makes one wonder how some of our youth have made it through university or college!?!??!
Perhaps you can post one of these words daily ... much in the way you did above and teach people one word at a time! Good luck with that .... I will definitely be watching for the next word!

Lack of attention while learning correct spelling at school, inability of or frustration among teachers to inculcate good spelling habits in their students and a few other reasons, are mainly responsible for poor spelling skills,
I think the reason for this word being consistently misspelled is the way people pronounce this word. (This also applies to many other commonly misspelled words!) If you would pay attention to different peoples' pronunciation of this word, you would realize that many spellings follow the pronunciation. Unfortunately, in English, hundreds of words are written different from the way they are pronounced, and hence the mistakes.

I don't know, but whatever it is, a lot of people on this website have the same problem. I've never seen so much poor grammar and spelling in my life.

It's a hard word to spell...I never manage to spell it right, thank goodness for spell checker, wich often comes up with "defiantly" anyways...incorrect spellings happen, don't be so anal, unless it's purposful.
