The ancient Greeks used the seas as trade routes to other kingdoms of the period. They were able to get new goods and technology by doing this, as well as share their ideas and spread of culture.
These new trade routes provided means of communication and the establishments of navies.
Hope this helps!

Same way they affect the people there now: they're the source of approximately all the wealth, such as it is, and there isn't much. The sea is good for transport, smuggling, and fish, and those were the principal sources of income in Grece, then and now. The coastline has a zillion tiny coves that you can hide a substantial ship in, even these days, and thus easily off-load a group of sex slaves from Serbia, across the Adriatic, or drugs, from Turkey, just up the coast. The Greeks were smuggling gold under the noses of the Persians thousands of years ago.
The Adriatic and the Mediterranean aren't fished out just yet, though they're pretty well picked over; the governments are only beginning to understand the magnitude of that problem. Even so, fishing is still a big deal in Greece, and it was thousands of years ago.
And there were Greek sailors and ships everywhere in the ancient world, just as there are Greek ships and sailors everywhere in ours.

It affected their entire economy. The sea was the fastest and safest way to transport goods, the land was rife with bandits and thugs. The oceans were also heavily tied in with their religion with gods such as posiedon and ect. Without the ocean, ancient greece would not be as vibrant or as wonderful as it was and is today.

The seas around Greece influenced the mentality, the habits as well as the economics of ancient Greeks.
By travelling they came in contact with other civilizations. They imported goods that they were not available in their country and they exported prime materials (opsianos etc) as well as hand made products, made by the materials they were importing. This guided them to financial benefits.
By coming in contact with other civilizations they became more open minded and they exchanged ideas and knowledge in all parts of life with others.
They influenced and they were influenced by other civilizations regarding religion (see relative statues)
