Is this mechanical, or electrical, nothing happens when you push the button located on the steering column

if its an add on (not OEM) it may be electrical, check fuses.
if its not a fuse about all you can do is replace it.

Well when you say older it may be helpful to know the year. But in any case, it really could be anything. You could have a defective cruise servo or a defective switch. i really don't think you will find an answer to your cruise problem here. BUt I would check to see if you have a wire that goes 12v ( on the servo under the hood )when you depress the set button. Do you know the manufacturer of the cruise? We carry Rostra, if it that type or SCS I can really help you.
