Depends on the context. You can "trifle" with a person which means engage them in an offhand, careless way, treating them as a passing minor amusement. Or a "trifle" can be a small gift, almost a party favor - it can also mean a very small amount, a trifling piece of cake.

I have also heard it used as meaning lazy and good for nothing. Ex: They won't do anything, they are so trifling.

i didn't know it was a real word until a few months ago, my country mom says it all of the time so i thought i was one of those words like 'finna' that people make up, but low and behold it's real.
