If so, what will result from that? Especially in terms of the US?

China should be considered a superpower because of the size of its army, which is the largest in the world. Of all the countries in the world, China would pose the most dangerous possible adversary. The United States has the good sense to stay on good terms with the Chinese. Luckily, China is a historically passive country. They could mount an incredibly effective defense if attacked. But they haven't been a country that looks to attack. They're extremely proud of their culture and would just rather be left alone.

"Superpower" is a term coined at the end of WWII. It describes a state that can influence events and project power on a world scale. At the end of WWII, there were three such powers: The US, the Soviet Union and the British empire. The British Empire was soon dismantled leaving the world with two superpowers and a cold war. The Soviet Union went bankrupt in the late 1980s and ultimately dissolved in the early 1990s, and left the world with one unipolar superpower.

No other country can claim superpower status as of present. The two closest- China and India- can influence events through economic means (although not in a very controlled fashion at this point), but cannot project power on a world scale. China does have the largest standing army, but is completely incapable of transporting and supporting that army very far past their border.

With the formation of the EU, Europe may also be in line for superpower status. They have a combined economy to match the US and organization to use it to influence events. They also have a sizable combined military force, but lack the organization and unity to project this over long distances.

I consider China a superpower already. They sure kick our *** and can pretty much do it any time they want.

Do you have any idea how much WE depend on THEM for trade?

Do you have any idea how many dollars they have in their reserves which they basically got from selling to us and paying our bills/debts for us?

If they were to just pull that out on us, we would have another VERY GREAT DEPRESSION.

In terms of technology, weaponry, military, space science, and alliances over the world, they are up there with the United States. They are just being very patient for some reason.

Russia, I wouldn't worry about because they are bank corrupt.

It is just about there. China and Russia are quietly taking advantage of our lack of economic sense (trade deficit ring a bell?) and complete inability to handle any other geopolitical problems now that we are so overcommited in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Your fellow Asian countries are indeed growing strongly. Countries like China, India, Hong Kong and Singapore all have rapid development in their economies.
