The caps are my favorite team, and between the three stand- out players of Ovechkin, Semin, and Kolzig, what will it take to get them to the playoffs next year? It seems as though every player on that team is very talented and has enormous potential, but they just can't get it done.

I really hope the Caps can put it together for next season. With Nicklas Backstrom coming in the Caps should finally have a pivot that can feed the puck to Ovi or Semin. Either one of those tandoms is scary and if one of them plays his off-wing it could be the most dangerous scoring line in the NHL next year. Eric Fehr is another awesome prospect coming up soon. That said, the Caps still aren't very deep, the management really needs to make an effort to keep the core players together and higher some more vets in the off-season. If they can do that, look for the Caps to get good real quick.

Too early to say without knowing what they pick up in the off-season (although their history is "not much").

Based on what we have now, I doubt it. There are THREE highly talented players (the ones you mentioned), NOT the whole team, in fact while Kolzig has done well to get some wins here and there, there are MANY better Goaltenders out there.

The biggest thing would be to get Ovechkin some help.

next year they have the potential to sneak into the playoffs as an 8 seed. they need to upgrade their defenseman and find some good players in free agency that make a quality second line. kolzig needs to stay healthy and semin needs to play more consistent. he has toooooooo many hot and cold streaks. all in all, i thin kthey could make it in next year if they get a little help from from free agency and if some of their young guys mature

They need defence and they will be good. Kolzig faces way too many shots a game. They will need to sign 2 or 3 D-men to be in playoff contention. So no, probably not.
Ovechkin is f*cking awesome though!

It really depends. They need to stay healthy, especially Kolzig, because they struggle without him. They lack in defense, so a few offseason signings could help them, but I don't see them making the playoffs for a couple of years.

not remotely.

they're 2 or 3 defensemen short of being competitive for the playoffs.

only if they are able to get some more pieces. They have a good little group they need more then one scoring line and a puck moving D man.
