Gore Vidal has written a wonderful book about Abraham Lincoln that gives insights into his early life, as well as his political years and his home life. I recommend it highly as a reference or just for a good read.

Well, a couple of things that I can think of are: He's the one who spoke of a government, "By the people, for the people, and of the people." Another is, he worked hard to free the slaves.
