Dude, go to wikipedia and look up horsepower. They have a great explanation of all the different terms. You'll be glad you did. So many people brag about what kind of horsepower their motor is supposed to have, but they don't have a clue how much actually makes it to the back tire where it counts. Torque is more important than horsepower in many instances anyway, and it's important to know the difference. Your friends will think you are a freakin' genius.

The definition of a million horsepower is the ability to develop 550 pounds a million foot extreme in a million 2nd. yet in any different case of asserting this is “550 foot-pounds according to 2nd”. Brake horsepower is the automobile’s horsepower measured the place the ability is extra (as an occasion, on the rear axle of a truck tractor. Shaft horsepower is the ability measured on the engine itself, before any losses from the snatch or differential happen. So the only actual difference is the place that is measured. in case you degree on the engine output, you may declare extreme numbers. yet what concerns is what's dropped on the tires. there is obviously some loss in the time of the gears, etc. so brake horsepower is the greater trustworthy selection.

Horsepower used to be measured on an engine with no accessories (allternator, power steering, torque convert not hooked up. Brake horsepower is measured WITH all of that hooked up. 'Raw' horsepower is made by very powerful engines like the old big block 427 Chevys and 426 Hemis, brute strength and tons of torque to burn tires and tear out clutches, transmissions and rear ends. The ultimate desire for maximum high performance. Lots of fun, too. Nothing quite like blowing a competitor's doors off!

They have different measuring points to determine HP. If you take the HP at the rear wheels, then I believe that is brake HP.. The amount of HP at the rear wheels or at the brake.

Raw HP is the power at the flywheel with nothing draining HP off, the absolute most HP the engine can make.
