Cuz they want to talk something...that means that they are respecting you in a way...cuz silence sometimes means ignorance...well they don't choose the best topics I agree..but still they are saying something.
However there is another option.Ifyou don't want to hear their comlpaints you can break the silence and talk something that you find interesting. Plus you might ask their opinions about certain thing.
