The thyroid gland produces thyroid hormone (t4), however it is made in the form of t3 (a precursor) which then becomes t4.

It also produces calcitonin.

The parathyroid gland produces parathormone (parathyroid hormone) which has effects on calcium metabolism.

The thyroid gland is an endocrine, which means it secrets Thyroid hormone directly into the blood stream. The parathyroid is also an endocrine. It's secretions are responsible for calcium metabolism. T4 & T3 probably have to do with secretions of said harmone from the anterior and posterior parts of it. The metabolic functions of each section of the gland have different metabolic effects. Example would be hyperthyroidism(an increased secretion of which can cause the appearance of buldging eyes in a person)
