The strangers don't know you, so they don't have any preconceptions of who you are. Also, if the strangers go their way you don't have to deal with a change in their opinion of you.

one would be less concerned about what kind of response they received because this person is not a peer so to speak.also,people that don't know you usually don't judge you--which no one ought to do anyway.
