Let me correct your confusion. In mid to early 06, Mercury developed a drug problem. WWE did not release him, but they did send him to rehab, and that's why he was off of TV for a majority of last year. This is the first time Joey "Mercury" Matthews has been released since joining the WWE's main roster.
I assume his release has something to do with drugs.

I dont know why the WWE keeps releasing Mercury. The WWE better becareful because any wrestler that they let go could be ending up in TNA and can make TNA a big name company.

him and chris masters were suspended indefintely early last year then he made his comeback to wrestle the hardys at the december to dismember (which was the only good thing about that PPV) they officialy released him today because of both his injury and his dependancy of pain killers and because they once again want to distinguish johnny nitro and melina as solo acts and not a tag team anymore. and they really dont have anywhere to put mercury as a singles competitor..hopefully he can get it back together and once again reunite MNM

Obviously he is doing something illegal, probably taking drugs....I thought they only released him once though?
