Are you talking about your lobes are the cartilage? If it is the lobes, it isn't 6 months, but actually 6 weeks. Even after 6 weeks, I'd recommend that you keep earrings in for a few more weeks (even when you sleep) to ensure the holes stay open.
If you're talking about your cartilage, you're an idiot for getting it done with a gun. The reason they ask you to keep it in so long is because of all the blunt trauma that just did to your poor cartilage. The earrings that they use in guns are not sharp/pointy on the end, so it causes extra stress. Plus, the guns cannot be properly cleaned/sterilized. Since a gun causes so much extra trauma, you need to give your body extra time to heal it. Unfortunately, most girls who get their cartilage pierced with a gun never have it heal properly.
In the future, you should get all piercings done by a professional who uses a hollow needle. It is much safer as far as diseases and infections, plus it hurts a lot less and causes less trauma to your body.

you don't have to wear them for six months u wear them for six weeks and its so the cartilage in your ear gets used to being pierced. Because if you take your studs out before the 6 weeks is up they close back up and you would have to do it again which is not fun

Your ears take forever to heal, and the earrings need to be real. Fake earrings can infect your ears if you put them in too early. You may run the risk of having to let your ears heal up if they get infected. Just be patient. :)

After you can take the earrings out and put others in..you dont have to wear studds. Bigger heaver earrings will help make the hole bigger (( and thats a good thing )).
It doesnt matter if you only wear studds or loopties or dangly earrings.
Trust me, i have alot of holes.
Goodluck!

Because since your body is used to healing itself, your ears will seal up.

1) so they don't close up, 2) so your cartilage gets used to being pierced and 3) because anything heavier might tear it.
