Well what is satellites? They are electronic devices which either relay radio or some form of communication signals or provide Earth bound stations with interstellar information like what a planet looks like.

You need to study electronics and learn about radio waves, spectrometers, infrared detectors etc. You can do all this in an electronics/engineering course.
