Create a small chat room program?

I want to make a little chat program for me and my friends at school where we can just type in a name and chat. i don't want to use a browser, I just want a little widget type of thing on my desktop. Also, they are mac laptops, so i need to program it for Max OS X.

Write it in Perl and GTK so it will run on anything. If you use POE half of the networking is already done for you. You could use Rendezvous, err.. Bonjour, no, ZeroConf (Bonjour is such a stupid stupid name) to locate other people near you; it probably has perl bindings.
