I am buying one in 2008.
No more buying parts, oil, gas.
Batteries are maintenance free and covered
by the warrantee so it matters little.
Billions will be invested in the infrastructure of solar, wind, geothermal and other alternative energy sources.
Solar power will be a huge benefit.
Solar plants 3 times the size of Rhode Island can power the entire USA at this time EASILY fitting anywhere in the southwest.(Utah, Nevada, Arizona,ETC.)

At this moment, oil runs the world's economy. Without something to replace the revenue earned from the sale of oil and its by-products, the global economy will tank. Electric cars are a nice stop-gap measure (once they become affordable), but are not the answer. Batteries are heavy and take up lots of space (currently). They are also expensive to maintain. You'll need to keep some re-charging equipment at home for those times your charge runs out on you. A wind generator is a good idea to couple to the charger, but that technology is still in the works. The best bet for electric cars is some sort of motor that generates its own electricity rather than carrying batteries for storage. Hydrogen powered engines would be perfect for this, except (right now) it is not economical to produce the hydrogen. The hydrogen is not the fuel, per se, it fuels the generator that provides electricity for the car. Unfortunately, a massive overhaul of the nation's fuel dispensing system is required. It'll be another thirty years or so before that is a viable option. So, for now, the battery powered car is a good idea, but I don't think big oil is particularly worried about it.
