I agree with Charkeyp--East Tennessee is a great place to live. I've lived a lot of different places and that was probably my favorite.
I can tell you the LEAST friendly place to live--New Mexico. They aren't even friendly to tourists no matter how much money you spend.

Texas. The name "Texas" even came from the Navajo word for "Friend". The bigger cities like Dallas and Houston are losing their southern charm, but in any city or town under half a million people, you get the true "southern comfort".
Some of the best for pure friendliness are Midland/Odessa, Palestine, New Braunfels (also home to Schlitterbahn), Wichita Falls, Kerville, Sugarland, and Tyler.
When we moved here to Austin, we had cookies on our doorstep the first day.

I stay in a state that's not very gay friendly (Kentucky), yet in a city that's particularly gay friendly (Louisville). there's a extensive resentment between the the remainder of Kentucky & Louisville... Louisville is particularly liberal, jointly as the the remainder of Kentucky isn't. Louisville has a complete regulation against employment, housing, & public lodging discrimination for all LGBT jointly as the state purely has a gay hate crime regulation. Louisville is gay friendly jointly as the interior sight cities of Cincinnati and Indianapolis are actually not. interior sight shops even sell shirts that say "Louisville... it is not Kentucky" with politicians each and every so often suggesting that the Ohio River would desire to be rerouted to cut up Louisville from the the remainder of the state because of the extreme variations. that's like residing in a citadel of enlightenment surrounded via a moat from the intolerance that exists in the the remainder of the state.
