Hi,
My 6 wk newborn is bottle fed breast milk with supplimental formula.
The first 3 wks, bowel movements were consistent and frequent... However, starting wk 4 to present, she completely stopped going "naturally". My wife and I have been inserting a rectal thermometer after 3-4 days and the stools come out soft without a problem.

Is this healthy? Aside from extremely abdominal fussiness, she is gaining weight and eating well. Anyone with the same problem? We're concerned this may be the start of a problem?

The constiapation may and more than likely comes from using both breast milk and formula. a baby's tummy can get confused between the two. You need to use one or the other. If it continues after a week you should consult your doctor. i know that with mine, i had to stop using supplimental fomula and just use breast milk. There are also sapositories for babies that you can get at your local drug store that are safe and made to help babies get their bowels going. If you can, also check out www.webmd.com it is a really wonderful site for any medical concern. Remember, all babys are different, but i would be to worried about it being a serious long term problem. I have 3 children and they all went through it.

There are a lot of parents who do use both formula and breastfeed their little ones and they adapt just fine. I did/do it for both of my girls!!! I would look to see how much iron is in the formula that you use. Sometimes if there's too much iron this can constipate your little one.

I would be a little afraid to use the rectal thermometer cause you could cause some damage.

Also it is normal for some breastfed babies to go longer between bowel movements. This is because some babies have less waste from the milk cause it is so easily digested. I have a friend who's little one goes every week to week and a half. Then you have other little one's like mine who go several times a day.

Best of luck and if you are really concerned, go and see your Dr.
