why is the name shawn often spelled sean? i though SEAN would be ponounced C-Ann or C.N because SEA sounds like the letter C and N of corse is N(in,) we say the words BEAN and LEAN yet SEAN is S-Yaw-N why?

The name is Celtic/Gaelic and the pronunciations of these names are different than those of North American English. We have bastardized the English language badly over time. Both Sean and Shawn are perfectly legitimate spellings of the same name. Spell it whatever way makes you happy, but Sean is the Celtic spelling, which is much different from North American English. After all, they're the same people who came up with Siobhan, pronounced Shavonne.

It is pronounced Sean/SHAWN like DAWN because that is the Gaelic pronunciation from which Sean originates, they dont pronounce words phonically. Shawn is a also a Gaelic name but its meaning is, from the name John where as Sean means, God is gracious. Although they both sound the same they have different meanings

I always liked Sean cause it looked cool but I get what you are saying about the way it is pronounced. I like Shawn because it looks the way it sounds but who new Danielle was pronounce Dan-yell but it is spelled a different way so my vote would be for Sean...i just like the way it looks

The original spelling is Sean. To me Shawn looks a bit trailer-trashy.

Sean is how the Irish spell it. You must remember that some letters take on different sounds in other languages.

I think you should go with Shawn because people will always call the kid Sean andn I know because one of my students name is Sean and I have the hardest time to get the kids to stop calling him Sean! Well thats my choice but its your baby! Good Luck!

I vote Shawn, I never have liked the spelling of "Sean" I naturally pronounce that as "Seen". So Shawn is a better choice.
