We want to use an anonymous donor, but would like more info than banks generally provide. We would like to be able to converse with him and ask our own questions. We have considered aquaintances, but have not found one with the right disposition. Is there a website, perhaps? Or might there be a registry with a sperm bank somewhere?

No one I know would do this. The risk is to high. Someday I might get tagged for child support. Its just not worth considering.

You asked your question using the word, "ship"... You mean, like maybe, put it in a small bottle, or baggie, and "ship" it to your house?

If transporting it is the idea, well, semen doesn't remain viable, that is, live very long, outside of the body - certainly not even 24 hours shipping by FedEx. Semen needs to be either frozen quickly (in I forget which, liquid N2 or solid CO2) then thawed and "inserted" quickly, or remain in a warm, moist environment (like your vagina, is best, of course) - neither exposed to room temperatures or air - to survive. On top, the delivery and insertion would have to be timed quite precisely. Also, sperm exists in nutrients (the prostatic fluids) that can become contanimated quickly, so if you do that you might be infecting your vagina at the same time.

If you do choose to use an "acquaintance", better get an experienced lawyer to sign some papers that confirm and reconfirm your intentions and the donor's... Protect yourself.

I mean, what type of guy would donate sperm (after the gratifying orgasm) without thinking that he is actually helping create life and then want to completely ignore his offspring?

Seems to me the donor would be a sex-starved socio-pathetic person whom I would never want to have anything to do with at all... And, you want his sperm?? The better you make his anonymity secure and maintain distance as much as possible.

Anyway, I would think that there are very few legal precedents for cases like yours if it ever came to paternity questions in the future - and a lawyer of that type would be expensive.

Much Easier Solution: Find a sperm bank that provides as much information as you feel comfortable with... Seek and you'll find one.
