if your talking about petroleum i think its buried, decomposed, plant and animal remains from millions of years ago. if your talking about cooking oil, well, look at the label. itll tell you

Some oil is fossil based, some lubricants are vegetable based. Whale oil was once used as a lubricant. And there are synthetic oils that are man made.
