ok, i uploaded a photo and sent it into a contest not thinking that it would be chosen as one of the photos to be published. i got a letter saying that i have to verify that it's my copy righted. although i'm not the one who took the photo, i have my friend's (the one who took the photo) permission to send it into the contest. is that wrong? becuase, the photo will be published under my name, not my firend's. should i include that in my statement (that my friend gave me the pemission)? or should i not say anything? i'm not intending to get all the credit for this.

I would be as honest as I could with the people your dealing with. Get a statement from your friend and send the statement, along with your own, verifying that the picture belongs to you and there is currently no copyright on it. If the contest requires a copyright on the photo then you may have to obtain one. But always ensure that due credit is given for something that's not your work as you could be disqualified otherwise, and could potentially open yourself up to legal action should they decide to sue you (unlikely but possible).
