I REALLY want a cute little pet, a rodent like a hamster. I don't want to get a hamster though, I;ve heard that they bite and their not very sensitive animals. I already got a guinea pig but it died a couple of years ago so not one of those. I was going to get a rat, but then I found out that they were very high matinence pets. WHAT DO I GET?????

Rats aren't high maintenance. They're very intelligent, clean, funny, and much better than hamsters. Yes, hamsters do have a reputation for being nippy and getting wet tail. Our blue-hooded rat is super. We got her when she was little from a good pet store. The Internet said to put your hand in and see which rat comes to you. I did that and she did. It was love at first sight -- in this case -- lick. Yes, Phoebe licks us like a dog. We have a cat, so Phoebe lives in a 10 gallon aquarium. She's really easy to keep. We feed her Reggie Rat with additional treats (grape, apple, cracker, rice, cheese, bit of meat or fish). She has pieces of material, like blankets, that go inside her igloo. She loves various sized boxes to hide in and climb over. We give her pieces of wood made for rats to chew. They need to gnaw on things to prevent their teeth from overgrowing. By the way, there are Internet sites that list toys for rats you can make. Girl rats tend to use one corner of their environment as a bathroom which is great. Plus, they don't get that oily coat that male rats get when they're older. We take her out every day and she hangs out on our shoulders. Sometimes she runs around the desk. Really is a people lover. On the negative side, rats do have a high incidence of tumors. On the average, they live about 2 years. Whatever you do, don't get a hermit crab. They are the most boring things ... and talk about high maintenance! For something you can't can't really hold or pet, they cost a fortune in electricity and hassle.

i all ready have a rat and she has never bit me yet. before i got my rat i asked ppl around stores about "is a rat a good pet" everybody who had a rat answered "yes" but ppl who haven't had a rat before answered "no" mostly because of the tail or what they saw in movies. but actually they are really nice animals because 1 they never bite. 2 if you put a rat on your shoulders it will not jump. 3 they are really nice.

why rats are not a good pet
1. you will have to buy a cage witch is about $50-80
there is no 2

Get a degu, its a south american rodent! They are VERY friendly and are like the type of little critter that just wants to sit on you shoulder, or nuzzle in your hair. If you get a degu you have to let it get used to you, so i suggest taking it out and holding it for 5-10 minutes and just stroking its head gently. Do this until you notice he or she is more realaxed with you, and then start putting it on your shoulder see how he or she deals with it! They are nice rodents and love companionship! They like to be more in pairs than alone, but if you do get only one degu then make sure you take it out, and play with it ALOT! If you have anymore questions about the degu then please feel free to email me!

Get a chinchilla! I have a little chinchilla named Gizmo- we call him Gizzy and he is totally awesome and soooo much fun!!! He jumps and runs around the house 24 hrs a day is now even litter trained! Its kinda a cross between a mouse and rabbit and they r really really soft and so much fun and they love to cuddle and be carried!!! Look them up on the net- they r awesome pets and I wouldnt trade my little Gizzy for anything! He isnt afraid of our two little dogs either- he will walk right up to them and walk on them or steel their food! lol

rats really aren't that bad any rodent you are going to need to do some matinence. but ratties just need some loving everyday... all pets need that... food, water, and their cage clean... any rodent will need that too. i think of my two rats like dogs. they are excited to see me and enjoy hanging out... in fact tweeker my baby rat is hanging out on my shoulder right now... she thinks you should try out a ratty ;)

Chinchilla's are very cute animals. Their only drawback is that they are nocturnal and could keep you up at night if you have the cage in your general sleeping area!

if you consider making sure that they have food and water and time with you high maintenance then i don't think any pet wouldn't be.
