It would depend upon how they traveled. Marco Polo spent twenty years away from his home in Venice, traveling the Silk Road through Asia to China by caravan.

Before motorized vehicles, water was the superhighway. Traveling by water was the fastest way to go. If an explorer went by water, he would travel more quickly.

I take it Cathay you mean Hong King? To Europe and using Spain as the destination going via sea routes it could take up to 6 months or so. Overland, going thru China and then west, an overland route depending on terrain and route used it would take a year maybe two.
