FYI, "waiting it out" is NOT an option--it's in a room w/ no windows.
I know the easy answer is, "open the wall and remove it." But HOW..? I am having difficulty finding a pro to do such a little job, and if I ask my landlords, I want to give them specific directions (so they can't spew excuses about it being too difficult or not knowing how). Thanks!

Unless you know where the mouse died within a couple of feet, all I can suggest is to let the other mice that are almost certainly present eat it. They don't care about such things as cannibalism. In a week, it should be gone.

I feel for you. The same thing happened to us about two years ago.

It scratched and scratched for more than a week.
Drove the cat and my wife crazy.
But I didn't want to have to patch a wall we just textured and painted at a prior remodel.

I kept telling her 'it'll die, stink for a day or two, then it'll be over".
When it did die, it stunk for two weeks. Bad.

We lived through it. And didn't have to patch a new wall.

The mouse entered the wall by falling through a romex hole from the attic.

Never another mouse again, but we still keep baited traps here and there.

Don't know what to tell you except I do know what you are going through.

If there is a hole or opening somewhere big enough, (I mean, how did you know it was in there at all?) use a vaccum cleaner hose. I did this by accident once when sucking the dirt out of a hole in the wall - and it scared the peewadin out of me! The hose should suck it up if it's not a rat or something... then you'll need to empty the hose of course. Good luck!

Short of cutting holes in the wall I have no idea how you can do this and I think your landlord will not want to cut holes in the wall. Get a lot of scented candles and Febreze.

My husband is an exterminator and if the exact location is known he cuts the dry wall out and takes out the mouse.

Drill a hole at the top of the wall and toss in a dead cat.
