It is to do with the Barbary Wars (1801-1805) when William Eaton and 1st Lt Presley O'Bannon led 7 Marines and 300 European and Arab mercenaries in an effort to capture Tripoli.

They only reached Derna, Libya but the action at Tripoli has been immortalized in the Marines Hymm...."to the shores of Tripoli."

Another tradition from this period that still exists is the carrying of the Mameluke Sword carried by Marine officers...this is where it originated.

I hope this info helps.

The answer about the battle of Derna is almost correct. The primary reason for the battle was that Tripoli was a hot bed of priates and they hid in and around Tripoli. The Marines had the job of defeating them in most any way possible to make the seas in the area safe.

The German Army during WW II was camped at Tripoli. It was well equipped with heavy arsenal to use against the United States and other participating forces. But, the US had a plan of its own and it was to dismantle and put out of service any arsenal the Germans had there. That was successful and allowed the ships to close in on Tripoli and for the planes to launch a major air strike against the Germans with support from the US destroyers and Cruisers. Tripoli was overtaken by the US with its ground forces.
In a nutshell, the shores of Tripoli were ousted of the German occupation.

The Marines engaged the Barbary Coast pirates at Tripoli, Algeria, who were stopping American Merchant vessels and demanding tribute from them so they could sail the area waters unmolested. Trade goods were often stolen and the ship crews enslaved. In 1815 the US Navy engaged and defeated the pirates. The on board Marines part in the battle led to the refrain.

it refers to the battle of Derna

The turning point in the war came with the Battle of Derna (April-May 1805), after a remarkably daring overland attack on the Tripolitan city of Derna by a combined force of United States Marines and Arab, Greek and Berber mercenaries under the command of ex-consul William Eaton, who went by the rank of general, and US Marine First Lieutenant Presley O'Bannon. This action, memorialized in the Marine Hymn — "to the shores of Tripoli" — gave the American forces a significant advantage.

I think the song is only trying to say that the marines will go anywhere to defend their nation.
