um....,the sun doesnt always rise in the east.
using a compass is a better idea but even a compass doesnt point to the true north.
a hand held GPS device is good but not easily available to everyone.

if in the night u can depend on pole star.
if in the day know the angle of inclination of the magneticcompass in ur place and u canfind out the true north

i'm very good at making myself sound as though i know an answer while i don't probable. It must be a journalistic high quality in my nature lol.
