I tried looking this up on Wikipedia, but it did not cite any reasons as to why people's eyes sometimes change color with their shirts, for example. I also tried googling it, but no luck...

I will, of course, award ten points to whoever can give me a fairly detailed, scientific answer and perhaps cite a source.

NB light reflects off uneven surfaces unevenly and the iris cell are living cells all different shape they reflect the light a slightly different angle so some reflections cancel each other out, the iris appears to reflect the stronger colour off the garment.

People's eyes do not change color according to their environment. Your perception of the eye color may change because of different lighting or if their eye color seems to match or clash with their shirt. Or if the shirt is nearly the same color but lighter or darker than the person's eye color.

I can't cite a source. Sorry. This just comes from many things I have learned over the years about how we perceive things (and from making horrible color choices on painted walls!).
