I live in the northern Great Lakes region, and I am looking for a type of flower or groundcover that would work well for two areas against my house. One is in morning and midday light, and afternoon shade, the other is in full shade. Both areas are about 2' by 10'. I want something that will fill the area, and be decorative but won't grow out of control. Thanks.

Vinca, sweet woodruff and ajuga are the first few things that come to mind that are particularly pleasant looking and will not take over. Though, sweet woodruff would cover things that do not grow taller than it's 4" or so height.

Vinca would work in both places you describe.
