this is a logic hw question, and no, i am not cheating, the teacher said we could use any help of any source, and i consider this a source. PLEASE HELP!!!

Hmmm, let'see: air is not a complete answer. And putting a balloon will not achieve anything as it will simply float on top and add to the weight of the bucket.

Actually anything lighter than water will float.

So you need to get something lighter than water and make it stick to the bucket. I guess you could glue an air balloon to the bottom of the bucket,

Dry ice to freeze it, is not ice lighter than water, ice floots in water. I have never tryed this, maybe the dry ice would make the water boil.. You could try air, it will make the water bubble and have less density.
